The Three-Tailed Demon Turtle
Season five of Naruto Shippuden (Part II of the manga) aired from Dec. 18, 2008 until June 4, 2009. It ran with a total of 24 episodes (89-112). Season five focuses on Naruto learning and mastering a new Water Style collaboration jutsu, creating new bonds with “enemies” and trying to tame a turtle bijuu. It is mostly another filler arc (ep. 91-111).
Beginning Jan. 2, 2009, Crunchyroll began providing subtitled Shippuden episodes. On January 8, 2009, TV Tokyo began broadcasting new episodes via internet streaming directly to monthly subscribers. Each streamed episode is be made available online within an hour of its Japanese premiere and include English subtitles. Viz began streaming English subtitled episodes on January 2, 2009 on their official website for the series. Dec. 18, 2008. ep. 89: The Price of Power
A heavy-hearted Shikamura promises Kurenai sensei that he will protect her unborn child. Only through Asuma Sarutobi’s death does Shikamaru realize who Konoha’s “king” is and why it is so important to protect this “king.” The “king” is Konoha village’s next generation, its hope.
An autopsy of Kakuzu’s corpse leads Tsunade to hand down an edict to Naruto (through Kakashi) that the Rasenshuriken will be forbidden for repeat usage in the future. Disobeying her orders will result in Naruto permanently destroying his ability to manipulate chakra. The Rasenshuriken is capable of slicing and cutting at a cellular level faster than a Sharingan can see it. It however causes the same damage to the user because it is a hand-held jutsu.
Hearing the death/sealing of two Akatsuki members by the younger generation of Konoha, Orochimaru sends Kabuto on a recon mission – seeking out a woman by the name of Guren.
Dec. 25, 2008. ep. 90: A Shinobi’s Determination
An Anbu discovers Orochimaru’s hideout and promptly sends a message back to Konoha before he is killed. Upon receiving the information, Tsunade dispatches Kakashi with Team 8, the tracking team, consisting of Shino (the insect master), Kiba/Akamaru (the hound) and Hinata (heiress to the byakugan) on a reconnaissance mission to seek out Sasuke.
Kabuto finds Guren and is attacked immediately to test his skills as Orochimaru’s right hand man.
Before Sasuke became Orochimaru’s intended vessel, Guren was his choice. Yet, when she was unable to get to him in time, Orochimaru’s next vessel became Gen’yumaru. She has, since then, been waiting patiently and loyally for Orochimaru’s next orders to be carried out. As an orphan, Orochimaru spotted her for her unique powers and she tagged along with him in envy of his power.
After proving his worth, Kabuto orders Guren to stir up chaos in a holding cell of experimental species, making them fight for their lives. The survivors of the battle were going to be used for a future operation with Guren as the leader.
Jiraiya offers to retrain Naruto again, since he is not allowed to use the deadly Rasenshuriken. Jiraiya’s main reason for taking Naruto from Konoha on a training trip is so he will not join Kakashi and Team 8 on their mission of finding Orochimaru’s hideout.
JANUARY 2009
Jan. 8, 2009. ep. 91: Orochimaru’s Hideout Discovered
Kakashi and Team 8 arrive too late – the den has been abandoned.
Twenty-one crossbreeds leave the hideout with Guren to meet Orochimaru. Despite that, only five are left standing when the original 21 stages a coup against Guren to escape instead of being used further. She kills them off with her Crystal Style jutsu. The five remaining are Rinji, Gozu, Kigiri, Kihou and Nurari.
Jiraiya begins Naruto’s training with a synchronizing jutsu to enhance and amplify Naruto’s strengths. The toad brothers Gamatatsu and Gamariki are summoned for the exercise.
Jan. 15, 2009. ep. 92: Encounter
Naruto stays on track with his training but cannot grasp how the connection to another’s heart will aid his training. Mismatched and frustrated, Gamariki throws in the towel from hunger. After a long day, Jiraiya “treats” his star pupil to a stay at a Hot Springs Village.
Guren leaves her men to find Orochimaru but bumps into Kakashi and Team 8 instead. A battle erupts and Guren crystallizes Shino’s insects. Shino sends one specimen back to Konoha for it to be analyzed. While Guren is gone, Rinji is left in charge of the team.
A young boy, Yuukimaru, is under the care of Kabuto. It seems Yuukimaru is able to draw out a mysterious creature from a lake. After Kabuto’s test, the pair head to a hot springs where Naruto and Jiraiya are.
Yuukimaru meets Naruto (without the watchful eyes of Kabuto) and speaks to him. As an orphan, Yuukimaru tells Naruto that he has no place to return to. Naruto replies that, the place to return is where the heart lies.
Jan. 22, 2009. ep. 93: Connecting Hearts
Naruto persists in his training with the toad brothers until Jiraiya takes leave to seek out the Akatsuki. Without a babysitter, Naruto heads back to Konoha to continue his training, only to realize that neither Gamakichi nor Gamatatsu can use the Water Style jutsu.
The crystallized insect is analyzed in Konoha’s forensics lab.
Rinji learns about the presence of Kakashi’s team through a bat he sent out.
Jan. 29, 2009. ep. 94: A Night of Rain
Kabuto leaves Yuukimaru in the care of Guren, who doesn’t quite know what to do with the child. However, Yuukimaru catches a cold during a rainfall one night and falls ill. Guren is forced to care for him, watching over him the entire night until she falls asleep from exhaustion. When she awakens, he is no longer around, but finds him under a camellia tree playing an instrument. She grows a little sentimental and protective over this child and crystallizes a camellia for him. She tells him, that as long as she is alive, the token will forever be whole.
Out in the forest with Kakashi and Team 8, Kiba discovers that the enemy is using bats to track them.
In Konoha, Naruto continues with the Water Style jutsu training with his summons. With new information emerging from the lab about the crystallized insect, Tsunade decides to send backup for Kakashi. She readies Yamamoto, Sai and Sakura.
FEBRUARY 2009
Feb.5, 2009. ep. 95: The Two Charms
Yamamoto, Sai and Sakura prepare to leave Konoha to meet up with Kakashi’s team. Naruto finds out about the mission and begs Tsunade to let him go too, who after a little nudge gives Naruto the green light. He returns to quickly train with Gamatatsu who finally learns the Water Style before the journey begins.
Guren brings Yuukimaru to their base/hideout. She leaves him there to meet up with her men. Before leaving, Yuukimaru gives her his most precious possession – a memento and protective charm from his mother.
Back in the forest, Shino finds a female insect crystallized that is still alive. He stays behind in the forest to breed insects that are immune to the Crystal Style Jutsu while Kakashi and the rest move out.
Feb. 12, 2009. ep. 96: The Unseeing Enemy
Guren’s men ambush Kakashi’s team with smoke screen. While Hinata and Kiba fend off their attackers (Kigiri – the smoke screen spewer, Nurari – the water like sprite who’s body structure stretches in unusual manner, Kihou – the long-range rocket launcher and Rinji – the bat controller), Kakashi is separated from the group battling Gozu the giant. Just as Guren’s men are about to gain the upper hand, Shino saves the day with his insects. Team Guren is forced to retreat in defeat.
Feb. 19, 2009. ep. 97: The Labyrinth of Distorted Reflection
The retreat was a trap. Guren was busy setting up a giant Crystal Prison over the forest to lure Team 8 in. Once the youngsters are in, she calls upon her 6 Crystal clones and attacks them. Unfortunately for Hinata, she is encased by Guren’s clone in a crystal. Guren then uses Hinata as hostage to prevent her men from being followed.
Yamato arrives with Sai, Sakura and Naruto in tow. Seeing the giant crystal prison, Naruto uses his new jutsu with Gamatatsu to break down the defenses.
Feb. 26, 2009. ep. 98: The Target Appears
Yamato and his team manage to retrieve an encased Hinata and aids the remaining members. Guren retreats to their hideout.
Hinata breaks free from the crystal encasement. Anyone else would have died in it, but she is able to cover her entire body with her chakra to protect it from solidifying. However, that takes a toll on her body, draining all her chakra. Kakashi splits the group up. Sai and Sakura are to remain by Hinata’s side to protect and heal her until she is better. The rest will go after Guren.
Back at the hideout, Kabuto orders the team to head to the lake to try to capture sanbi – the Three-Tailed Beast. Using a machine to amplify Yuukimaru’s chakra while overdosing him with medication, Kabuto hopes to lure sanbi out.
MARCH 2009
March 5, 2009. ep. 99: The Rampaging Tailed Beast
Yuukimaru summons sanbi while Guren tries to capture it. Guren attempts to restrain it, but is no match for the beast. Sanbi, wanting no part in that, breaks free and attacks Guren instead.
Seeing a huge mist coming from the lake, Kakashi directs Naruto to investigate the growing plume. Naruto summons his trusty toad brothers and approaches sanbi. He sees Guren using the last of her chakra to save Yuukimaru and passes out thereafter. Yuukimaru then drags Guren to safety, away from the lake. In the chaos of sanbi’s rage, Naruto looses sight of Yuukimaru.
The remaining Leaf Ninjas go hunting for Rinji and his men. The hunter became the hunted when team Guren prepares an ambush for team Kakashi. However, the healed Hinata, Sakura and Sai arrive in time to avert a disaster.
March 12, 2009. ep. 100: Inside the Mist
In the mist created by sanbi, everyone in it is caught in a genjutsu – illusion. Guren who is unconscious from her fight with sanbi relives her past. When Guren comes to, Yuukimaru instead falls ill and passes out.
Naruto sees Sasuke in his genjutsu, but is awaken by Kakashi. Everyone retreats to recover from their ordeal. That night, when everyone is asleep, Naruto sneaks off to search for the missing Yuukimaru to save him from Orochimaru’s henchmen.
Tsunade gets wind of sanbi at the lake, and assembles Shizune, Ino, Tenten and Lee to seal the beast before Akatsuki gets to it.
March 19, 2009. ep. 101: Everyone’s Feelings
While searching for Yuukimaru, Naruto bumps into Guren and fights her for the “release” of Yuukimaru. Guren, who has been ever loyal and unquestioningly devoted to Orochimaru, hears a completely different view of Orochimaru from Naruto. Yuukimaru appears and stops the fisticuff.
Guren then regroups with Kabuto, who tells her that Yuukimaru is nothing but a tool for a bigger purpose – THEIR master’s goal of retrieving sanbi. This upsets her even more and makes her question if what Naruto said is true that the path she has chosen is the wrong one.
Yamato and Kakashi locate Naruto and reassemble the group. Team Shizune arrives at the rendezvous point and relays their new mission: seal sanbi and rescue Yuukimaru.
March 26, 2009. ep. 102: Regroup!
The Leaf Ninjas are split into three groups.
• Sealing team: Leader Shizune, Sakura, Ino and Hinata
• Fighting team: Leader Kakashi, Naruto, Sai and Shino
• Guarding team: Leader Yamato, Lee, Tenten and Kiba

Apr. 9, 2009. ep. 103 & 104: The Four-Corner Sealing Barrier & Breaking the Crystal Style
The teams are off on their separate mission. The sealing team prepares a search and barrier jutsu to seal sanbi. Yamato’s guarding team fends off Rinji’s men easily, thus protecting the girls.
Elsewhere in the forest, Gozu and Guren suddenly attack Kakashi’s fighting team. Shino’s bugs, the new breed immune to Guren’s Crystal Style, easily counters her. Kakashi almost kills Guren, but for Gozu stepping in protecting her instead. After the scuffle and near death, Guren returns to Yuukimaru and hears him playing a grass-whistle. She remembers the lilt and realizes that she is the one who killed Yuukimaru’s mother. In her bid to please Orochimaru and to prove her allegiance, she kills off a kind stranger who nursed her while she was sick.
Kabuto uses this knowledge as leverage against Guren and her new found relationship with Yuukimaru.
The two-man Akatsuki team of Deidara and Tobi splits when the two has a small spat. Tobi decides to find sanbi himself and as luck would have it, the idiot stumbles upon the Leaf Ninja sealing team at the lake.

Apr. 16, 2009. ep. 105: The Battle Over the Barrier
Guren, worried that Kabuto would reveal her secret, returns to the lake with Yuukimaru to try to stop the sealing and secure sanbi for Orochimaru instead. With the help of Rinji, she disrupts the sealing jutsu and sanbi begins attacking everyone in the vicinity.
When sanbi tries to attack Guren, Yuukimaru uses his power to stop it – thus falling right into Orochimaru’s plan of manipulating Yuukimaru into loving Guren and using his power to protect her.
The observing Tobi sees sanbi and runs off to bring Deidara senpai.
Apr. 23, 2009. ep. 106: Red Camellia
Yuukimaru runs out of chakra restraining sanbi from attacking Guren. With sanbi unchecked, the beast goes after Yuukimaru instead. In horror, Guren leaves her post at the lake to protect Yuukimaru at the cliff with her Crystal Style shield.
Naruto ends up joining forces with Guren when he realizes that Yuukimaru is in danger. Despite teaming up, sanbi quickly overpowers them and swallows them instead.
Kakashi’s team finds an unconscious Yuukimaru and rescues him.
Apr. 30, 2009. ep. 107: Strange Bedfellows
Sakura and Ino heal the weakened Yuukimaru, while the rest search for a missing Naruto.
Inside the stomach of the beast, Naruto helps an unconscious Guren dress an earlier wound. When she awakens they began arguing about where Yuukimaru belongs. Guren and Naruto finally get their much-needed time alone. She accuses Konoha of wanting sanbi for their evil goals. Naruto disputes this by telling her HE is the jinchuuriki for kyuubi (the nine-tailed fox), which caused fear and hatred from his fellow villagers when he was younger. He refutes her thoughts by refusing to use kyuubi’s powers in fear of hurting his loved ones and friends.
Seeing Naruto’s genuine concern for Yuukimaru, she divulges that she is the one who made Yuukimaru an orphan. She then decides that Yuukimaru should not be with Orochimaru or her, but with Naruto. The change in her brings about the change in Naruto. He thinks that she can make up for her mistakes and be together with Yuukimaru.
While a horde of hungry mini sanbis attack them, Naruto summons his numerous kage bunshin (shadow clones) to find a means of escape.
Rinji’s men, suffering from defeat, follows Kabuto who promises to make them “powerful”. He gives them the Curse Marks and orders them to recapture Yuukimaru. Little do they know the consequences behind the “gift.”
MAY 2009
May 7, 2009. ep. 108: Guidepost of the Camellia
Naruto and Guren team up to find a way out of the belly of sanbi only to encounter sanbi’s mist genjutsu. Naruto ends up chasing an elusive Sasuke.
Meanwhile, Yuukimaru and Kakashi come up with a rescue plan for Naruto and Guren. Collecting the camellias, they float it towards sanbi while Yuukimaru plays the tune his mother taught him with the grass-whistle. Kakashi then breaks into sanbi’s barrier. Naruto and Guren, upon hearing the song and seeing the floating camellias blast their way out of sanbi.
May 14, 2009. ep. 109: Counterattack of the Curse Mark
The Sealing team, lead by Shizune, tries to contain sanbi again.
Sai is left to protect Yuukimaru, but is ambushed by the souped-up team of Rinji. With the kid in their hold, Rinji decides to betray Orochimaru. The men too began suffering from their newly acquired powers, but Rinji provides them with an antidote only if they promise not to betray him.
While Yamato’s Guarding team stand-by to protect the sealing team, the healed men of Rinji attacks them. This time, Kakashi, Shino and Yamato take the lead in protection.
May 21, 2009. ep. 110: Memory of Guilt
Tsunade sends her slug, Katsuyu, to aid the Sealing team.
Kakashi, Yamato and Shino defeats Rinji’s men who merge into one being and prepare to locate Yuukimaru.
With Yuukimaru in Rinji’s hold, he is once again forced to control sanbi. Guren and Naruto arrive in time to stop Rinji from forcing Yuukimaru from taking any more drugs. Turns out, Rinji is really Kabuto in disguise. Kabuto then reveals to Yuukimaru that it was Guren who made him an orphan. To Guren’s surprise and elation, Yuukimaru forgives her, revealing to each other how much they mean to the other. Kabuto tries to attack Guren but has Naruto aiding her instead. Naruto tells Guren to leave with Yuukimaru and protect him.
May 28, 2009. ep. 111: Shattered Promise
Kabuto, having killed Rinji, summons his corpse to attack Guren while fending off Naruto.
Guren, still wounded from the earlier battle with sanbi, manages to crystallize herself with Rinji. The huge crystal encompassing Guren and Rinji fall into the lake. Grief stricken from Guren’s “death,” Yuukimaru causes sanbi to go into a rampage. With her death, Guren will no longer be the place Yuukimaru can return to.
Naruto, seeing the outrage beast, uses his Collaboration Jutsu to attack sanbi, forcing it underwater.
He then consoles the heartbroken Yuukimaru, and promises that they will return home together.
JUNE 2009
June 4, 2009. ep. 112: A Place to Return to
The presumed dead Gozu rescues Guren from the bottom of the lake, thus reuniting Yuukimaru, who has lost his ability to control sanbi, with his surrogate mother.
Tsunade orders her ninja teams back to Konoha (empty handed) to regroup and recuperate from their wounds. ANBU black-ops are sent in their place to keep watch on sanbi.
Unfortunately for the ANBUs, Tobi brings Deidara senpai back to the lake. The ANBUs are murdered and Deidara alone overpowers sanbi and brings the beast back to Akatsuki headquaters. Sanbi becomes chop liver.
