Vampire Knight

Vampire Knight is a manga written by Matsuri Hino in January 2005. The manga is still on-going. Drama CDs were created and it was also adapted into anime. The first season of anime aired in Japan from April 1 to July 1, 2008. The second season, “Vampire Knight Guilty” aired from Oct. 7 to Dec. 20, 2008, keeping many of the voice actors used for the drama CDs. Both seasons of anime had a total of 26 episodes. The series has also been reformatted to light novels and video games

Cross Academy is a school that caters to both humans and vampires. Zero Kiryu, who comes from a family of vampire hunters, believes he lost his family and more importantly his twin brother to a Pureblood vampire avenging the death of her human lover. On the other end, Kaname Kuran is the heir of the Pureblood vampires and Head of the Kuran Clan.  Together, they both vie for the attention and love of Yuuki Cross.  Yuuki’s earliest memory was being rescued from a Level E vampire attack by Kaname Senpai when she was only a child. A level E vampire is one who only follows his feeding instincts and nothing else. That is why, she has always adored Kaname / loved him from afar. She is the adopted daughter of Headmaster Kaien Cross, and ex-vampire hunter who established the school to bring peace between the two races. Together, Yuuki and Zero are the prefects of the school, guarding this fragile co-existence between the vampires and the humans.

Zero Kiryu

Zero Kiryu

It is not surprising that Zero doesn’t hold much trust of the vampires roaming the school grounds. He sees his duty not as a peace-keeper, but a guard against sudden attacks from the vampires. Unfortunately for him, the Pureblood, Shizuka Hio, who attacked his family four years ago, came looking for him, and turn him to a vampire too. His twin brother reappears, willingly living by Shizuka’s side as a human, but wanting dearly to be turned into a vampire. Yuuki tries to help Zero fight his bloodlust, but as the yearning wears on, Yuuki soon becomes his meal ticket, to avoid him from turning to a level E vampire. To stop him from draining Yuuki, Kaname steps in, giving Zero his pure blood. Before stepping in, Kaname drains Shizuka, thus stopping Zero from turning into a level E.

Finally, Yuuki regains her memories with the arrival of Rido Kuran and his followers. It is revealed that she herself is a Pureblood (even purer than Kaname), Princess of the Kurans and fiancée to Kaname. Kaname was sired by Yuuki’s uncle, Rido Kuran, who killed her parents. Her parents, Juuri and Haruka Kuran are younger siblings to Rido. Rido fell in love with his younger sister, Juuri, but Juuri picked Haruka over him. In despair, he tries to kill off the Kuran heirs, but is foiled by Juuri and Kaname. Although they call each other brothers and sisters, Yuuki grew up believing that Kaname is not her blood brother. To save Yuuki from being killed by her uncle, Yuuki’s mother sealed her memories away and put her under a spell so that she could live as a human without being found. Kaname was the one who brought her to Kaien Cross, and Kaien promised to hide her from the world. Sensing that Yuuki’s vampire nature is reawaken, Rido Kuran comes for her blood again – believing Yuuki to be a resurrected Juuri.

Kaname and his group of loyal friends kill off the corrupt vampire senate, while Yuuki battles Rido with her new-found powers. Zero helps her, but after destroying Rido with Kaname, Zero tells Yuuki he will have to kill her the next time he sees her. In turn, she replies that she will keep running for him to have a reason to live. The anime ends here, but the manga continues.
